about

I just love it for some reason, I know it’s too long but it reminded me of NDW’s Palau; rhythmical half-spoken vocal lines over layers of simple loop rhythms with keyboard and guitar textures. Phil’s lines in this song are great. I sat in the studio by myself and sang lines of words over and over again to create the mass vocal effect, even picking up the melodica every now and then. My wife Lynne sings the beautiful “devil will take your soul “, and “sun I kamap sun I go daun” refrains, her debut performance on a record of any nature. It is set at a funeral I attended in Bougainville PNG, hence the imagery: crushed lime smeared across the face and coconut oil, ritual and chants, women singing all the good attributes that the dead boy had. The ritual seems to make more sense than anything Christianity has to offer; hence the Pentecostal, Book of Revelations reference. Features a wonderful Torres Strait vocal and voice percussion part from dancer Albert David. The cascading vocals are sung by women from the village of Luya in the Trobriand Islands. I love the insects that bridge this song from the end of the previous song.
