about

Started off as a piano motown vamp, descending chords, ascending melody. Classic edgy pop song structure that I learnt off Vic Coppersmith Heaven when we coproduced Telek’s Serious Tam record at Real World. Vic produced all the Jam’s records and I admit to fusing a bit of Paul Weller into this tune! Got Adam Hutterer from the Disappointments to cobble together a small brass section to put down a thick hook over a wall of sound: keyboard, guitar (how’s Phil’s lead break? Have rarely had lead breaks from the guitar on my records over the past 25 years) and bass “chug,” the wonderful Nicole Shenko to lay down a drop dead gorgeous backing vocal over my throaty singing. It’s a desperate song of survival, of a yearning for a sense of community, often lost with the present day emphasis on “every man for himself” economics and tattoos of the flag on blokes shoulders. But through it all, the positive peeks out its little head, we’ll stick together, work it through, help each other out and never succumb.

lyrics

SUCCUMB (Bridie)

We used to feel each other’s sadness
Used to heal each other’s pain
Used to ride each other’s ups and downs
First down then up again

We used to cry out loud in sympathy
Used to offer up protection
Always knowing what we had on offer wouldn’t cure the pain

Oh we fight and we breathe
We waste away, try hard to believe
But we’ll never succumb

These days we hardly notice
Seem to be preoccupied
Don’t hear much beyond the front fence
We got that entertainment system up too loud

When the fighting starts up next door
Hear the cry of fear come through the floor
We turn away, can’t hear a sound
Can’t do much to turn things around

Oh we fight and we breathe
We waste away, try hard to believe
But we’ll never succumb

‘Oh Vanity,’ the preacher said
‘Is evident in all young men.’
Flying the flag, pumped up on parade
A parody of the diggers they’d like to emulate

Make up slogans with different meaning
Religious paintings on the ceiling
Grow the front hedge 6 feet high
Convince your kids one day they’ll fly

Oh we fight and we breathe
We waste away, try hard to believe
But we’ll never succumb
