about
I’ve always wanted to write a straight to the guts rock song, in the way that Bob Mould has with Sugar. It was one of the first tunes I wrote for this record, because with that progression, any note you chose in the scale will suspend off any of the chords. I drunkenly belted the vocal harmony, to have the confidence to hit the top note. Anyway Phil, Paul, Airi and I belt away like a rock band. I am looking forward to playing it live. Adam Hutterer again came up with a brass ensemble to belt out this brash punk brass lines, thinking along the lines of the Saints Prehistoric Sounds. The lyric comes out of the utter hypocrisy that surrounds Australia’s me-tooism in following George W into Iraq, the lies littered under every bogus excuse and rationalisation. And the David Hicks saga gets a mention because Guantanamo is a great word to sing, it has a wonderful rhythm. Also Ruddock and Downer disowned the lad, left him to be used as a political pawn. I have to own up to blatantly borrowing a lyric idea from the Reels song Comedy: “I’ll pray for you, if you vote for me, I’ll kill for you if you pray for me...” but religion and war have been linked for so long, this modern day war being no exception.

GOING OUT WITH THE ENEMY (Bridie)
Oh yeah don’t leave without me
Down by the tributary
That’s where you’ll find me
Watching all the clutter flow
I jump out into the whitewater
Don’t want to but think I oughta
Two miles past the black waterhole
And I sleep so comfortably
This was always meant to be
We don’t move for 48 hours
And there’s no patriots round here
There are none of those that we fear
I’m going that way
I’m going out with the enemy
Lost part of my dignity
Deep inside Guantanamo Bay
The dizzy spin is fast, do we
Learn from this disaster
If not, I'm in one hell of a bind
And I have been praying for years
And I have been waiting for years
I’ll vote for you, come pray for me
I’m with you on the economy
Come vote for me, I’ll pray for you
Going out with the enemy
Down by the tributary
That’s where you’ll find me
Watching all the clutter flow

This is one more reason why I wish MFTCC would tour the states (I live in Pittsburgh). Some tracks, like "Weather Coast" sound even better live than in the studio. Fantastic playing and great songs. It's a pity my copy hasn't arrived yet (ordered it in Sept) but I'm still enjoying the digital download. Philip Maye
